Message in a Bottle
I’ve established a beachhead. It has required some some brushing out, but I think I have a pretty good landing place for the next group of colonists. I’ve done a lot of things alone before, but I’ve never colonized a realm. So it feels a bit strange to be the only occupant of Alaska, the wikicity. It’s just a matter of time before someone else shows up. But I wonder…who will it be?
I read a little bit about wiki startups on Meatball. An article I especially liked - I’ve read it a few times - addressed the tendency of wiki founders to feel possessive about their domains. I recognize that tendency and I would like to devolve power as soon as possible. I’ve set up a landing place with a welcome mat for any Alaskan who cares to join me. I’ve also prepared a place for visitors to leave a sign of their passing.
But I feel like a sitting duck. I could be overwhelmed by a tribe of invaders. Or I could try to rule like a GodKing. I want neither. (Not likely, though the idea does hold some appeal, as Chris recognizes.) I’m hoping that the wikicity develops into a freewheeling complex community without a strong center, many points of entry. I want to help build it and then watch it grow. Scepters and crowns are free for the taking.
I need help. I have lots of ideas, and so do other people. What does anyone think about the idea of starting up an Alaskan flea market as part of the site? (Just an example of where my thinking is going.)
Please visit the Alaska wiki and tell me if what I did there makes sense. If you see anything that looks funky, corny, confusing, or otherwise wrong, please tell me. Or better still, try to fix it yourself and see if it works. I am wide open to suggestions. I like direct criticism. I would be glad to have members of the commweb class take up residence on the project.

Your documentation of the process of discovering Wikis, implementing a wiki-city, and then your attention to the social structures that evolve out of the collaboration are going to be a very useful series of articles in and of themselves before long!
A constant in a good wiki is the need for refactoring. Love the chaos, as you do, and if you always have some kind of refactoring to do then you know things are going well.
I sure hope it wasn’t my advice about index files and .htaccess that hosed your class the other night! I swear I use that line all the time!
