10 Feet is a Long Way Sometimes
Summer is almost over. I have lots of jobs to do before I dive back into school. One of them is to put a basketball hoop up in our woodsy yard. We have no pavement, no garage, no level ground, and no good place for a basketball hoop. After a fair amount of deliberation and procrastination I decided to do the easiest thing and hang a backboard on a tree and call it good enough. Remember I said that there is no level ground.
I had the extension ladder against the tree this afternoon. I was reaching out with my hammer to bang the support into the tree. The ladder rolled off the tree and I rode it all the way down to the gravel driveway. I made a futile grab for the tree trunk. I couldn’t get my feet off the ladder so I had no choice about how to land.
Ice and ibuprofin. No basketball hoop.
I wish I’d thought it through a little more before I climbed up there. How many times have I spent a few days regretting something I did to save a few minutes?

The thing that seems important here is not so much the silly accident which we all bring on ourselves trying shortcuts, but the fact that you were thinking of and doing something for your kids.

Sore, and somewhat daunted, I am grateful for your endorsement of my intentions. I think we may explore an alternate way of getting a basketball hoop in the yard. Good to hear from you.

And that’s how you fell out of the tree.
Just looked at your slideshow on flickr. I love the one of Amy gutting the salmon and also the three kids under the netting.
