Testify: NCLB Reauthorization
For anyone who has an opinion about NCLB, the law is up for reauthorization. The Commission on No Child Left Behind is bipartisan, and will make recommendations to Congress. Those who are serving on the commission are listed , each on their own page with a biographical profile. The committe is diverse. Among others, there is a teacher, a CEO, a governor, a college president, and a school board chair, formerly “named Tupperware Corporation’s single National Star.”
The second meeting of the commission was yesterday. The commissioners heard testimony on ways to improve NCLB. You can see video of yesterday’s hearing. I’ve only watched a few minutes of what is apparently a 2hr+ hearing, but it’s interesting to see it in progress.
Update: Members introduce themselves at about 14:00 minutes into the video. Very interesting.
The committee is accepting public testimony over the internet. They are scheduled for a meeting on May 22 concerning holding schools accountable. An additional meeting on June 9 will address the topic of successful interventions.
It was hard not to litter this post with “quotation marks” but I decided to save the commentary for an explicit statement here, at the end. I don’t know if there is anyone on the committee who is open to the idea of scrapping the entire project, but in the interest of encouraging an outcome that would begin to address deficiencies in a piece of legislation that has completely changed the conversation about education,
Teachers must be heard.
