The Tyranny of freedom versus the Tyranny of the good.

Schwartz (2000) may well argue that too much choice is demotivating, and leads to dissatisfaction and depression but the tyranny of the good is more frightening Doug - thanks for the post Doug you well explain the issues at stake

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." C S Lewis

Has anyone asked educators about the best ways to protect children? How many Congressmen have been in a classroom or worked with teenagers.

Teenagers respond well to education and poorly to rules. We need funding for parent and student education since the research shows that the 40% of parents who do not use filters are those who are not tech savvy. That is where the problems lie. That is where we should work!

Folks writing (and voting for) laws should at least know what they're doing. But I heard my own congressman say that he didn't have time to read all that stuff. I believe him. We need to slow those guys down and make them think a little harder.

Great stuff Doug. Motivated me to add this... Now, on your alternative motion, gosh, it sounds like you're suggesting folks should be responsible for their actions. Don't know about that one...
