Susan, a recent blogging acquaintance, tagged me with a meme post. Thanks, Susan, and because it’s Christmas, here’s 5 things you might not (care to?) know ’bout me:
- I’m left handed. (I’ve been wondering how I was ever going to work this into a blog post.) Somehow – and maybe only other southpaws would know what I’m talking about – I believe we think differently from everyone else. At the moment, my left hand is broken and in a cast (until mid January) from a fall on the ice in front of my house. I am milking the situation to avoid as many responsibilities as I can.
- The only other time my left arm has been out of commission was 14 years ago when I crashed my bicycle to avoid hitting a black bear that walked onto the trail in front of me. I had two sled dogs harnessed to the bike, pulling me downhill. I remember lying on the ground in a helpless heap, trying to keep the dogs away from the bear by holding the bike with my unhurt arm. The bear crashed off through the brush. Turns out I separated my shoulder. I was a celebrity in the ER that morning.
- Speaking of celebrity, my grandfather, Curt Coleman, played baseball for the New York Highlanders in 1912. I used to play with his glove when I was a kid. Too bad nobody kept track of it.
- I’ve read – consulted – I Ching on an off for the last 30 years. Ever think about how useful it might be to have access to an oracle? Not very, it turns out, but it’s something to think about.
- I learn by doing – I figured out how to build a house by reading a book until I got to the roof, and needed a real carpenter; I learned to use a sewing machine by making a parka and anorak to wear winter mountaineering; I decided to become a blogger so that I could better understand how to use the internet with students.

Merry Christmas. And a warm winter solstice to all. It’s -10 degreesF here today. We get 3 hours, 41 minutes and 30 seconds of official daylight.

Hey, my son is a lefty too-they are the world’s artists and visionaries I always tell him….I told you of my fall down the steps and head stitches about the same day as your tumbles didn’t I? For all those wishing I had some sense knocked into me I think it didn’t work …
… I have a family devoted to baseball as a savior-and of course exclaining and telling stories of your relative,
you have through your blogging and hard work transformed mine
…..and I learned to work a sewing machine at the Morgan Shirt Company in Morgantown, WVA where I worked a week and almost died learning why factory work is very tough…but I pulled a lot of bottom hems on shirts
…. I have no doubt you could read a book and change the world Doug…oh yeah…you are.
Please watch yourself….and bears…man…5 things to help me say to you, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays…have you read the Nell Noddings? I can’t figure out tagging yet but I’m going to redo everything in the next week and learn…..And ……I think your delicious articles are changing me…boy am I reading. I wish I could send you this 70 degree day.
..And the I Ching is profound
…as is Borderland , my friend you are inspiring…Sarah
That just is not enough daylight! I read your blog often and love it. And I’ve shared it with other teachers in my school. Merry Christmas to you, too!
Thanks for playing along Doug. I enjoy your blog and believe it is a great resource for teachers. The days are getting longer now so enjoy the coming light!

Wow Doug, I’m glad you were able to keep the dogs from the bear. That’s certainly a story worth retelling but one I’m sure you don’t care to repeat. Before my wife and I were married we went backpacking in the Tetons and saw a bear go through our camp in the evening after we had hung our bear bag and had left to fill our water bottles. That made her a believer in taking care to not attract bears to our camp through sloppy camping! I really miss the mountains and the opportunity to live in and around wild places and things. Thanks for sharing your list of five things!
Moose are actually more of a hazard around here. But I don’t have any good moose stories….yet.
Doug, thanks, I finally did this. It was fun, once I figured out who to tag. Happy New Year! – Mark
I can’t imagine having such few hours of daylight. I fight depression throughout the whole winter and I live in the lower 48 of the U.S. Based on your inspirational entries the darkness doesn’t seem to have effected you as much as it would have, me. Happy New Year!!

[...] The five things meme has finally caught up with me via Doug “Left-Handed” Noon and although I risk a mass of people unsubscribing with my dodgy viewpoints, I’ll play. (Although, I had never encountered the word “meme” before blogging.) Hey, the worst that can happen is that I’m confirmed to be as boring as people have suspected! [...]
