new blog skin
I’ve got a new blog skin running now. Looks OK to me, but I’m wondering if it works in other browsers, etc.
Last time I tried this it didn’t run right for some folks. If there’s any usability problem, please let me know.

What should it look like?
What I see is gray. And it has gray splotches. And is sorta disorienting but I know how fun it is to change these. And I can’t figure out why meaning is tied to how these look. It has a very dictionary feel…in a good way.
I just got out of another day’s ” things” but will go see what’s up on researcher tonight. I literally have not had a minute. Meanwhile you re-do your blog.
If I could get rid of those dots on mine I’d be happy..but I fear…

Hi Doug
Seems OK to me.
Minimalistic, I guess.

OK, Kevin and Sarah….Minimalism is on purpose, so that works - for me, anyway. And the whole business of what it’s “supposed to look like” is a good thing to ask. The last theme - which I had for a few years - used a hacked up style sheet, that didn’t look at all like I wanted it to when I saw it on my brother’s PC last week. So the gray splotches are on purpose. Funny, the designer titled it “Accidental Grayscale,” and I suppose it wasn’t on purpose for her.
Sarah, your point that meaning is tied to these things is an interesting question to ponder. I think it has something to do with semiotics, and now that you mention it, I want to learn more about that part of blogging… A dictionary feel, eh? I don’t know about that. Maybe I could do something to those splotches.
The other part of it is usability. I like the big comment box with the large typeface. It’s hard (for me) to write comments in a cramped little text field. There’s also a wider column for the blog posts than my previous one.
Thanks for the feedback.

Text seems to contrast better with the background in Safari on my Mac than in Firefox on my Windows box. That could be a font-compatibility issue. Or my Windows monitor could be whacked.

Can I append a screen-grab of how it looks for me, I wonder?
It looks even blander using Firefox on my iBook G4 than it did on a Windoze machine running IE latest (whatever) version. How about a little color, eh? It is spring-time, after all.
Nothing out of whack, tho. All seems to be in the right place.

Will proceed with stylesheet changes. Good to hear that all is in place.

I saw a site where you changed it to your preference…where was that I put on clouds.
If I redesign, ever…. after much thought I’m going to figure out how to put at the top choices for the viewer. That seems kind of fun.
On the other hand….just font changes affect my “listening”.
I suppose I reconcile this as what I learned about people. Speaking as a 21 year old girl, speaking as a worn 47 year old…I note a few differences. I mean “in person” lessons. So I guess this somehow relates to categorization. This is so different for me it’s almost not you. At least at first and even odder I’m mentally translating it into the old form.
I liked that look or at least incorporated it into my sorting.
And beyond that this is soooooo spaced. I find that amazing.
But, change is good.

Doug - I’m looking at it in Safari and everything seems fine and works - how it looks is your preference - I think it looks fine. Hope that helps. How is the THAW going up there? Loved your post about that the other day.

Thanks to all who’ve commented (and may still) here. I’m grateful for your help. I like the layout, but I’m still not convinced I’ve got the right color scheme - currently “slate gray” - and now that I’ve found all the relevant code to make changes, I may continue to play with that for a bit.
Weather….we’re doing well. Light jackets in the morning. Sun’s out till 11:00 pm. Not much incentive to sleep anymore.

It looks good, but I’m not real fond of the combination of font and line height (leading)… something isn’t quite right about it. Maybe too much letterspacing the font. It’s hard to read…
However, I almost never actually visit the site outside of my RSS reader except to make comments

Hi, Doug.
It’s been awhile since I’ve visited. And, to my pleasant surprise - a new blog skin to greet me!
I like it. I’m partial to grey, black - neutral colors.

Made some changes to the line-height setting, thanks, Chris. And for now I’ll resist temptations to mess with the colors because it takes a long time and I can never predict from the little sample chips how a combination will look spashed all over the place. Glad to know they look OK to someone, at least.
