Hi Emily. The problem I'd have with the question you're trying to answer is that the terms, 'schools' and 'technology' are way too abstract to pin to any particular answer. Maybe there's a context for the question that would help narrow the possible meanings, but in general, I find that those kinds of questions aren't very productive - unless you just want to start a conversation. Schools have many institutional missions, and computer technology might be helpful at many levels. As for making a general recommendation, yes or no, I can't say. Questions like this flare up periodically in ed-tech blogs. Follow the links from this recent article, for example.

Hi Doug,

I am a graduate student in education at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I'm taking an Educational Technology class and I am currently working on a group project in which we are examining the question: "Should schools be on the leading edge of technology?" We are doing a presentation on this topic next Friday. I read this blog entry and found it to be a useful resource for our presentation. I was also wondering if you have any opinions on this specific question. Please advise -- thank you for your time!
